Surfing in Biarritz
Biarritz is located in the Basque Country and has become a paradise for surfers in search of waves. It's a lively town with plenty of cultural activities to discover.
Biarritz is famous for its picturesque beaches, and no wonder. With its golden sands and crashing waves, it's an ideal spot for surfers of all levels.
The city has a long tradition of hosting international surfing competitions, and there are numerous surf schools throughout the city to take advantage of this. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced surfer, you'll find the perfect place to catch a wave. Beach breaks, point breaks, you'll find a wide variety of surf spots, from Anglet in the north to Hendaye in the south. Surf spots are usually crowded all year round, and particularly so in summer when people from all over Europe gather in the south-west of France to surf.
Be sure to respect other surfers and be cool.
Our best surf spots :
Anglet: A large stretch of sand from the River Adour to the WWF. Powerful beach break with great waves when the sandbanks are in place. Right and left.
La Grande Plage: Beach/reef break with rights and lefts. Can be very powerful and fast on big swell days.
Côte des Basques: The place where European surfing began. A varied wave with lots of people in the water, from beginners to experts. Very busy all the time.
Guethary: A legendary surf spot surrounded by a typical Basque village and million-euro villas. It's a big-wave spot reserved for experienced surfers, with guns over 8 feet.
Hendaye: A popular beach with fun waves. It's a fallback spot when the other spots are saturated.
With its proximity to the Spanish border, Biarritz enjoys a unique blend of French and Spanish cultures. Traditional Basque culture is still very much alive here, with many traditional restaurants, stores and festivals at explorer.
It's well worth visiting traditional Basque villages such as Bidart and Guethary, with their colorful houses and Basque pelota courts.
Outdoor enthusiasts can explorer the surrounding countryside.
There's plenty of hiking to be done around Biarritz, including the iconic La Rhune mountain, which offers 360-degree views from Spain to the Landes.
A stroll along the coast, from the Lighthouse in the north to the Côte des Basques in the south, to admire breathtaking views of the coastline.
Finally, a day in San Sebastian is a must when visiting the Basque Country, with its beautiful old town offering numerous tapas bars.
Happy surfing!
